On being in love: Knowing your gaze

We are told that God will “counsel us with His loving eye on us” (Psalm 32:8).

These are comforting words that I have not deeply understood until recently.

As I have been in love these past couple of months, I have experienced the privilege and delight that comes with having a pair of caring eyes on me at all times. Even with my love being 500 miles away from me (most of the time), I can always feel his careful gaze, watching and taking notice of my needs.

I did not know that humans were capable of interpreting the way someone picks up their glass, changes their smile ever-so-slightly, or takes a deep breath as the light turns from red to green.

It is not simply having anyone’s gaze upon you that changes you - but a specific person. I have been changed by the most tender, compassionate, and light gaze that flows from my love’s gentle heart.

If a human’s love has the ability to comfort and remind me that I am not just looked at, but seen - how much more is that of the Father’s love?

There are many wonderful things about being in love - things that my imagination was too small to dream of. However, I find that the most wonderful thing about this love that I get to participate in, is how it points me to something greater, something eternal - someone eternal.

Psalm 139:2-3: "You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways."
